UANI Applauds Snapback Of U.N. Sanctions On Iran
(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today upon news that the U.S. intends to trigger the snapback mechanism which reimposes all international sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran. The U.S. retains the right to do so under U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231.
“UANI applauds the Trump administration’s decision to take decisive action in restoring nearly all the previously suspended U.N. sanctions on Iran via the snapback mechanism, as is its right. The deep flaws of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and Resolution 2231 paved the way for this day.
“U.S. leadership is forcing the U.N. to fulfill its duty of maintaining international peace and security. By triggering the snapback provision, the interests of the U.S. and its allies will be greatly enhanced.
“Allowing the arms embargo to sunset would reward Iran for its malign conduct, and the failure to extend it would put lives at risk. Iran’s bloodstained record of four decades has made this an inarguable point. The snapback sanctions will also provide added leverage for the international community to change the regime’s behavior.
“UANI applauds the Trump administration for its continued focus and resolve in advancing its maximum pressure campaign, especially the latest sanctions on companies supporting Mahan Air. This policy sends an unequivocal message to the world that the U.S. is committed to upholding this strategy to deter Iran and its proxies from hurting and maiming democratic nations and their representatives.”
UANI’s report, What’s Wrong With the Iran Nuclear Deal, analyzes the shortcomings of the agreement. UANI has also analyzed the implications of allowing the international arms embargo on Iran to expire in its report, JCPOA Sunset Alert: Arms Embargo.
