UANI Applauds New Sanctions Targeting Hezbollah’s Terror Financing Unit

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today following the announcement by the U.S. Department of the Treasury that it had designated Hezbollah leaders responsible for managing and maintaining Hezbollah’s financial unit, Al-Qard al-Hassan (AQAH). Enhanced economic targeting of the Iranian proxy terrorist force was a key element in UANI’s recommendations for next steps in the maximum pressure campaign.

“UANI applauds the Biden Administration for today’s action aimed at shutting down pathways for Iran-backed Hezbollah to acquire funding for its terrorist operations. The United States must remain vigilant in ensuring that schemes to evade sanctions are disrupted and exposed, and that the Iranian regime feels increasing economic pressure on itself, its terrorist forces, and its proxies. Today’s actions reflect that commitment by the White House.

“More can be done though to reign in Hezbollah and protect the integrity of the global banking system from terror financing and money laundering. As AQAH operates with a license from Lebanon’s Interior Ministry, Lebanon should be designated as a jurisdiction of primary money laundering concern under Section 311 of the USA PATRIOT Act. Money transfer companies that operate in Lebanon must exercise enhanced due diligence to protect against U.S. funds reaching Hezbollah, and Hezbollah’s sprawling economic interests must be curbed by the U.S. in partnership with allied nations."
