UANI Applauds Sanctioning of Iranian Judges, Calls for Strengthening Sanctions Enforcement
(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and Ambassador Mark D. Wallace today applauded the Trump Administration’s announced human rights sanctions against Iranian judges and called for strengthening existing sanctions enforcement on Iran’s key industries.
“We applaud the Trump administration for sanctioning two notorious members of Iran's judiciary who have systematically abused Iranians for exercising their right to free expression and assembly. One of the judges, Mohammad Moghisseh, is known for his repression of the Bahai community and other religious minorities. The other, Abolghassem Salavati, is nicknamed ‘the hanging judge.’ These designations are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done after the deaths of more than 300 protesters at the hands of the regime. The time to act is now. Specifically, the U.S. government should sanction officials who played a prominent role in the recent crackdown, including Iran’s interior minister and its attorney general.”
UANI has called for strengthening existing sanctions on Iran’s shipping, metals, and petrochemicals industries and welcomed news that the administration plans to warn ship insurers, banks, charter companies, port owners, crews and captains of their sanctions exposure and demand that insurers and ship owners pay closer attention to AIS transponders. These measures and other recommendations are part of UANI’s Next Steps in the Maximum Pressure Campaign, a listing of 16 specific areas for strengthening the maximum pressure campaign.
