UANI Applauds U.S. Leadership In Restoring U.N. Sanctions Against Iran
(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today after the U.S. announced the restoration of all U.N. sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran as is its right under the snapback mechanism in U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231.
“UANI applauds the Trump Administration for its steadfast leadership to ensure that the integrity of the U.N. Security Council is upheld and that Iran is held accountable for its many breaches of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which are sufficient cause to trigger the snapback mechanism to reimpose all U.N. sanctions.
“The world must recognize the Iranian regime for what it is: an extremist, terrorist organization, rather than an ordinary country. Its behavior leaves no doubt that the international community must do more to force Tehran to end its malign behaviors.
“The world is safer today thanks to U.S. leadership. Sadly, however, other permanent members of the U.N. Security Council have manufactured a crisis that threatens to severely undermine the body’s authority. They are more fixated on the idea of the JCPOA than the reality of the threat on the ground. The regime continues to execute a reign of terror across the region and beyond. The reimposition of sanctions against Iran and the permanence of the global arms embargo are necessary in stifling Tehran’s ability to arm its global terror proxies. Iran must be denied the ability to purchase tanks, missile systems and other materiel as specified under the arms embargo.
"The time has come to prioritize peace over profits, and unify behind the maximum pressure campaign. The time for half-measures, deeply flawed deals, and excuses is over. We must commit ourselves to an economic blockade of Iran for the sake of international security.”
UANI’s report, What’s Wrong With the Iran Nuclear Deal, analyzes the shortcomings of the agreement. UANI has also analyzed the implications of allowing the international arms embargo on Iran to expire in its report, JCPOA Sunset Alert: Arms Embargo.
