UANI Calls For Additional Sanctions And U.S.-EU Coordination In Response To Iran’s Human Rights Violations

(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement today urging the U.S. and its international partners to work in coordination to apply human rights sanctions against more Iranian officials. Reportedly, at least 83 Iranians including children have been killed and hundreds more arrested during protests that began in the wake of the death of Mahsa Amini in Morality Police custody.

“The Iranian regime denies its people their human rights. The U.S. and other responsible nations must do everything possible to hold regime officials accountable, disrupt Iran’s information blackout, and support Iranians risking their lives to demand freedom.

“Already, the U.S. has levied sanctions against Iran’s Morality Police and senior leaders of Iran’s security organizations. Canada will soon take similar action. Others have strongly denounced the regime’s actions and summoned Iran’s envoys.

“But more actions can be taken. The EU, for example, has not yet levied sanctions against Iran for the death of Mahsa Amini.

“The U.S. and EU must synchronize their Iran sanctions lists. For example, the EU has sanctioned 89 persons or entities for human rights abuses, but the U.S. has only sanctioned 33 of those. Similarly, of the approximately 170 persons or entities the U.S. has sanctioned for similar reasons, the EU has only sanctioned 33 of them.

“For over ten years, the Americans and Europeans have failed to coordinate their application of human rights sanctions. The West must take this opportunity to correct that mistake, punish the regime, and support the Iranian people.”
