UANI Impact: UANI-Identified Tankers Sanctioned By U.S. Department Of The Treasury

(New York, NY) – On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) acted against two Hong Kong and Marshall Islands-owned ship vessels for their role in supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF)-backed Houthi financial facilitator Sa’id al-Jamal. The two vessels in question – Palau-flagged RENEEZ and Panama-flagged ETERNAL FORTUNE – were identified last year by United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) and added to its running list of foreign-flagged vessels suspected of involvement in the transfer of Iranian crude oil and/or petroleum products.

RENEEZ, owned by Marshall Islands-based Reneez Shipping Limited, has transported tens of thousands of metric tons of Iranian commodities for al-Jamal. Reneez Shipping Limited is being designated for this action in coordination with Executive Order 13224 that aims to disrupt the financial network for terrorists.

UANI researchers first identified RENEEZ loading oil from Iran’s Bandar Mahshar in June 2023. The vessel has loaded five times since and is currently offloading Iranian oil via ship-to-ship (STS) transfer to vessel A JEWEL in Singaporean waters.

The other vessel, ETERNAL FORTUNE, owned by Hong Kong-based Hongkong United Group Ltd, is sanctioned for emitting a false AIS signal while receiving a STS transfer from Panama-flagged and sanctioned ship ARTURA.

UANI first identified ETERNAL FORTUNE in October 2023. The vessel is now en route to China to offload the oil.

UANI’s resource, The Ghost Armada, identifies hundreds of other foreign-flagged vessels suspected of skirting U.S. sanctions, and it is urgent that the U.S. take swift action to hold all parties participating in sanctions evasion accountable. In the absence of strict sanctions enforcement, Iran has managed to sell $90 billion worth of U.S.-sanctioned oil over the last three years, setting new export records in the process – a fact noted by The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board on Thursday.
