UANI Releases New Regime Leadership Profile On Ahmad Jannati

Jannati Holds Leadership Posts With Guardian Council & Assembly Of Experts

(New York, N.Y.) — Today, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) announced the release of a new resource profiling Ahmad Jannati, one of the most senior players within the Iranian regime since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Jannati wields enormous influence as the secretary of Iran’s Guardian Council and chairman of its Assembly of Experts. The Guardian Council controls which candidates can stand for elections and can veto or demand changes to legislation passed by the Iranian parliament, among other powers. The Assembly of Experts is constitutionally empowered to select Iran’s supreme leader.

UANI’s resource, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati: Chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts and Secretary of the Guardian Council, explores Jannati’s lifelong service to the Iranian regime and the development of his relationships with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In addition to his service to the regime, the 95-year-old Jannati has played a leading role in the Haghani School of Thought, a radical system of beliefs to indoctrinate clerical leaders. Among those beliefs is the idea that an apocalyptic battle will hasten the return of the 12th Imam (“Mahdi”), who will rescue all Shi’a Muslims from evil and create an Islamic state. 

Before rising to elite positions with the Guardian Council and Assembly of Experts, Jannati presided over revolutionary courts in Ahvaz, Isfahan, Khuzestan, and Tehran despite having no legal training. He also sought to galvanize support for the regime domestically and abroad as head of the Islamic Propaganda Organization. 

Khomeini appointed Jannati to be the Friday Prayer Imam in Ahvaz at the dawn of the Islamic Republic in November 1979. He was appointed to the same position in Qom in 1981 and Tehran in 1992. His sermons often featured strong anti-westernism, anti-Americanism, and anti-Israel views, as well as his complete intolerance for political opposition. He is known for his virulent antipathy toward the U.S., has called for Iraqis to take up violence against U.S. forces in Iraq, and on numerous occasions led crowds in chanting “Death to America.”
