Biography

Saeed Azizi is an Iranian-Swedish dual national who resides in Sweden.

Arrest

Azizi was arrested by the Iranian regime on November 12, 2023, while he was visiting Iran.

Charges, Conviction, Sentencing, and Appeal

Azizi was charged with “assembly and collusion against national security.” Judge Iman Afshari of Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran found Azizi guilty in February 2024 and sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment. His sentence was upheld by an appeals court in March 2024.

Treatment in Captivity

Azizi was jailed at the notoriously brutal Evin Prison. His attorney said that Azizi suffered from prostate cancer and had been injured due to a fall while imprisoned.

Release

Iran freed Azizi and fellow Swedish national Johan Floderus on June 15, 2024, in exchange for Sweden releasing former Iranian official Hamid Noury, who had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in Sweden for his role in the killing of thousands of political prisoners in Iran.
