Following UANI Letter, Munich Security Conference Decides Not to Host Iran’s Government
(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, and Advisory Board Member Alireza Akhondi released the following joint statement today applauding the Munich Security Conference (MSC) for refusing to invite Iran’s government to attend this week’s conference after UANI sent a letter warning MSC leadership about the record of Iran’s foreign minister. UANI Chairman Senator Lieberman, who will be participating in the MSC this year, is a member of the board of trustees of the American Friends of the Munich Security Conference. The MSC will be taking place from February 16-18.
“We applaud the Munich Security Conference for announcing in February that it will not be inviting Iran’s government to participate in this year’s conference. This decision comes after UANI sent a letter to the MSC’s leadership outlining its significant concerns with Iranian destabilizing activity in Europe and exposing the record of Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization.
“With the IRGC actively plotting terror attacks against the Iranian and Jewish communities across Europe, including in Germany, it would have been completely inappropriate to afford a platform to Iranian government officials to propagandize at the MSC, which is one of the world’s leading security fora.
“Diplomatic isolation is an underutilized tool by the international community in holding the Islamic Republic accountable for its crimes. Tehran is very sensitive to its exclusion from prestigious gatherings like the MSC. Other institutions should follow the example of the MSC and refuse invitations to Iranian government representatives.”
