Masoud Pezeshkian Is Anything But A “Moderate”

(New York, NY) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement on Masoud Pezeshkian winning the presidency of the Islamic Republic of Iran:

“Masoud Pezeshkian’s ascension to the presidency of the Islamic Republic is only the latest example of the Ayatollah’s installation of a smiling frontman for a brutal regime to neutralize international pressure. Pezeshkian, like so-called “moderates” Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani before him, will have no real power but will instead be exploited by the supreme leader as compliant subordinates to lull Western policymakers into offering concessions.

“The Iranian people, which overwhelmingly boycotted the presidential contest, have sent a clear message to the international community: that Iran’s regime is unreformable and irredeemable. The United States and its allies should listen to the Iranian people and not fall for the supreme leader’s political theater.

“Irrespective of the Iranian president, the U.S. government should be fully enforcing U.S. sanctions, expanding designations to include the supreme leader and his inner circle, leading a campaign to recruit as many countries around the world as possible to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, and rebuilding American deterrence against Tehran, which has been badly eroded in recent years.”

About Masoud Pezeshkian

Masoud Pezeshkian has risen through the ranks as a loyal servant of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. From spearheading the imposition of the hijab on women across hospitals and universities to declaring his “strong support” for the IRGC and even justifying internet blackouts during times of suppression in Iran, Pezeshkian has vowed to implement the will of the supreme leader. He has also pledged to continue the policies of his predecessor as president Ebrahim Raisi, known as the “Butcher of Tehran.”
