New and Updated UANI Resources on the Joint Plan of Action and the Iranian Regime
New Resource Highlights "10 Myths of the Joint Plan of Action"
New York, NY - As nuclear negotiations between the P5+1 and Iran resume this week for the first time in 2015, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is releasing new and updated resources, including its Geneva Interim Agreement Tracker, Rouhani Accountability Tracker, VERITAS Victims Project, Iran Sanctions: Fact or Fiction, and 10 Myths of the Joint Plan of Action (JPA).
Following the second extension of the JPA in November 2014, negotiations to reach a final agreement have exceeded the timeline for negotiations established in 2013 of "no more than one year." The extended period of the negotiations enables comparison between predictions and assertions made about the JPA process against quantifiable facts and measurable outcomes established over time.
UANI's new resource examines the veracity of several claims about the JPA and the negotiating process between the P5+1 and Iran including that:
- The JPA has "rolled back" and "halted progress" on Iran's nuclear program
- President Rouhani is a moderate
- President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif are constrained by regime hardliners
- A "good deal" increases Iran's breakout time to 6 months
- Sanctions relief is "economically insignificant" and Iran "will be even deeper in the hole... when the deal expires"
- Congressional critics of the JPA are just as "hard-line" as their Iranian counterparts
- Sanctions pressure on Iran has "continue[d] to mount" throughout the duration of the JPA, and existing sanctions have continued to be vigorously enforced
- Western firms remain extremely wary of doing business in Iran, since reputational risk remains severe
- The JPA has not undercut international consensus to pressure Iran
- A nuclear deal is the gateway to improved U.S.-Iran relations and cooperation in combating ISIS
