UANI Urges Biden Administration To Maintain Terror Designations Against Iran-Backed Houthis

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today following the launch of a U.S. Department of State internal review into the previous administration’s designation of the Iran-backed Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity:

“The Iran-backed Houthis launch violent, terrorist operations against innocent civilians, U.S. personnel, and our allies in the region – with full financial and materiel support from Tehran. Recently there were reports that Iran’s regime had transferred suicide drones to the Houthis.

“Iran is both the architect and the primary beneficiary of the Houthis’ ongoing and deadly offensive. The previous administration’s decision to act against the Houthis reflected bipartisan support for stopping the Houthis. It is possible to maintain the FTO and SDGT designations while also granting licenses to enable humanitarian assistance to reach the Yemeni people. U.S. national security requires the decisions reached earlier this month to be maintained, and we urge the Biden administration to do so.”

UANI’s resource, Iran’s Proxy Wars: Yemen, outlines Iran’s financial and militaristic support of the Houthis and the destabilizing consequences for Yemen from these activities. UANI’s Houthis resource analyzes the Islamic Republic of Iran’s backing of the Houthis as part of the regime’s worldwide terror campaign.
