Description

"Member of Iran’s Expediency Council, former IRGC official and former speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, also known as the Iranian Majlis or Iranian Parliament."1

Former secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) from 2005 to 2007. According to Article 176 of the Iranian constitution, the duties of the SNSC are threefold: determining the defense and national security policies within the framework of general policies stipulated by the supreme leader; alignment of domestic and national security policies; and ensuring the country maintains the requisite resources to defend against internal and external threats. The National Domestic Security Council (NDSC), which executes crackdowns on protests, is a subunit of the SNSC23

Former head (1994–2004) of the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), which disseminates regime propaganda and broadcasts forced "confessions" by political prisoners. On Larijani's watch, IRIB attacked political dissidents.

Former minister of culture and Islamic guidance (1992–94). That ministry censors dissenting political views and oversees the Press Supervisory Board, which, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, "was established in 1986... for the purpose of issuing licenses to publications, inspecting and supervising newspapers’ and news agencies’ performances, and overseeing subsidies to the press, all according to the Iranian Press Laws passed in 1986." Both the ministry and the Press Supervisory Board are sanctioned by the U.S. for human rights abuses.4567

Honorary member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, an extremist-dominated, policy-making government body that developed stricter regulations in 2019 for mandatory hijab wearing.
