Shariatmadari, Hossein
Editor in chief (1993–present) of the hardline state-run newspaper Kayhan, which is thought to reflect Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's views. Appointed as editor by Khamenei.1 In his post, he engaged in "inciting violence and hatred" against Baha'is, justifying "suppression of political dissidents," and "[f]raming and slandering environmental activists."2
Has called for taking EU nationals hostage.3 Former interrogator for the intelligence ministry, in which role he tortured dissidents to secure false confessions and produced a television show broadcasting such confessions.4
