In addition to not authorizing peaceful gatherings, Hussein Tala was instrumental in ordering the brutal crackdown and arrest of protesters, which killed at least 34 protesters and led to the death of at least five detainees under torture. Hussein Tala repeatedly attributed peaceful protests to foreign countries in interviews with the media. In an interview on 20 February, 2012, Hossein Tala explicitly referred to the disconnection of the telecommunications system in order to disrupt the media coverage of the protests."³
